Installer improvements
This page contains possible installer improvements.
Possible improvements
- Recent installer framework is in the version 4.3.5 which has some bugs. By the creation of the installers this version was stable. Now there is a new version available 5.0.0-rc2 which left the beta status and fixed some known bugs. The point is to evaluate and possibly to utilize the new version of the installer framework.
- The welcome screen (first installation panel) needs some polishing. We can use some graphics and nice fonts there. One point is to reduce the text content and replace it with some beautiful images. So for example the "Documentation" section can use pictures to link the provided websites.
- Rethinking the package structure.
- Adding the Windows Service installation point
- Some useful post installation documentation. I think we should use less text and more graphical stuff there. One starting point is the actual inspectIT start screen.
- The installer has the ability to start some program after the installation process. Here we can think on starting inspectIT and CMR if the user wishes so.
- The Java Archive format (JAR) is very uncommon installer format. This format can confuse some users. Maybe is an option to wrap the jar in some operating system specific format. Windows -> EXE, Linux -> Bash script.
- The main graphic on the left hand site is too soft. The picture should use darker colors.
- The inspectIT logo (the picture on the top) uses an old font in it.
